After a very strong start since officially announcing his gubernatorial aspirations within the New Progressive Party (NPP) last year, it seems like the candidacy of Ricardo Rosselló is losing ground, while Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi has gained strength and is now slightly ahead, following a series of focus groups conducted after several massive protests were held against the implementation of a value-added tax. According to people involved in the focus groups, Rosselló’s initial strong lead over Pierluisi has been reduced, while the resident commissioner’s image has vastly improved. Out of the 18 focus groups held throughout the island, former Senate President Tomás Rivera Schatz, who is rumored to be considering a gubernatorial run in a possible three-way NPP primary, was only mentioned in one of them. Meanwhile, people within the NPP are trying to propel the Pierluisi for governor-Rosselló for resident commissioner ensemble as an unbeatable team for the 2016 general elections.
